Abstract | This report presents the results of a study to identify the demographic characteristics of undergraduate students enrolled in agriculture majors at Tennessee universities. These characteristics are analyzed: background data, parental information, high school data, work experience, college experience, and goals. Responses are presented for the total group and by university. Narrative information and data tables are included. Background information includes race, age, country of citizenship, home states, majors, and marital status. Parental information is provided in these areas: places where mother and father were raised, farming status of parents, current occupations and employment status of fathers and mothers, parental income, fathers' and mothers' highest level of educational attainment, and political preference. High school data include type of high school attended, size of high school graduating class, high school grade point average, agriculture classes offered, agriculture classes completed, classes that influenced students, and participation in high school activities. Work and college experience concerns are type of work experience, other universities attended, influential people, change in major, and factors important in choosing major. Following are some findings: (1) female and minority enrollment is low; (2) declining numbers of students have agricultural background or experience; (3) parents heavily influence students' choice of major; and (4) students need current, accurate information about career opportunities in agriculture.
