AbstractIntended for teachers of English as a second language, this paper treats the common problems instructors encounter in helping students improve their English language reading skills and offers practical exercises designed to enhance the reading experience for foreign students. Following an introductory section that discusses the particular difficulties reading in English presents for Japanese students, the paper discusses the selection of materials--asking the teacher to keep in mind the students' purposes and interests in studying English, the diverse literary forms that can be used, as well as other considerations, such as bias, length, difficulty, and the advisability of using reading materials written in standard English. Next the paper deals with vocabulary definition, and subsequently enumerates the basic skills necessary for reading, including skimming for an overall impression, scanning for specific information, recognizing the main idea of a selection, noting details and understanding relationships, and understanding the sequence of ideas or events. The major portion of the article discusses the purpose and development of various types of reading exercises, such as (1) skimming exercises, (2) comprehension questions, (3) chart exercise, (4) organization exercise, (5) visualization exercise, (6) cloze exercise, (7) outline exercise, and (8) discussion questions.
