AbstractBeginning with a theme article supplying teacher background material on the role of business in the community, this issue focuses on the profit motive, competition, and the use of resources. Four instructional units on this topic are included for young children. The pre-kindergarten unit, "Pancake Producers," has children observe workers cooking and serving pancakes at a real restaurant in preparation for starting their own "business." In "Family Coupon Company," the unit for first and second grade, clipping coupons and organizing a coupon company motivates students to contribute to the family budget while they earn money for themselves. The unit for third and fourth grade, "Kid Kards," has students combine their creative and organizational talents to produce and market their own stationary, greeting cards and notepaper, and the final unit "Classroom Commerce," intended for fifth and sixth grade, has students examine all the factors involved in producing a product or service and enables them to experience how supply and demand affect price.
