| Abstract | To investigate the use of a self-monitoring activity as a method of promoting generalization of a target speech sound to nontraining conditions, 40 children (grades 2-7) with articulation impairments (sound substitutions) attended individual or small group speech therapy sessions. Self-monitoring activity focused on the child recording correct sounds immediately following correct sound production. Analysis of the children's generalization to their natural environments revealed that all of the Ss demonstrated increases in the use of the target sound outside the clinical environment. Ss consistently used the correct sound 90% to 100% of the time and continued to use the target sound correctly following termination of recordkeeping. A replication study was performed which showed at least measurable improvements in 27 children. Study recommendations included increased involvement of therapy clients in their own therapy programs.
