AbstractA study was conducted at Ricks College to determine how well the online public access catalog in the Learning Resources Center (LRC) met the needs of freshmen students. Following a comprehensive literature search, a task force of librarians and selected students participated in the development of a questionnaire, which solicited information on students' characteristics and background, interface between the patron and the computer, and satisfaction with the LRC and its staff. The questionnaires were administered to a sample of 351 students registered in a required humanities course. Study findings included the following: (1) 53% of the respondents were female, 64% were under 21 years of age, and 61% had had a high school grade point average of 3.0 or higher; (2) 63% of the students had no or very little prior experience with computers; (3) 75% had had typing in high school; (4) 61% felt more comfortable with the Ricks College LRC than their high school library; (5) 74% were satisfied with the location of the terminals at the LRC; and (6) factors contributing to the respondents' comfort with the online catalog included the following: having had typing in high school, liking to try new ideas, having a computer at home, frequently using the LRC, and having previous computer experience. Recommendations emerging from the survey focused on orientation workshops for students, one-on-one training for faculty, and minicourses for patrons with no typing skills. The questionnaire is included. (LAL)
