AbstractThe Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI) and worry and emotionality items from the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) (Form Y) were administered to college students from three metropolitan colleges as part of several psychological experiments. The TAI was administered to a total of 543 students, and the STAI A-State items were administered twice to a significant subsample of the total data base (N = 343). Factor analyses of the TAI items indicated clear worry and emotionality factors consistent with the original TAI development. For the subsample with both TAI and A-State item data, factor analyses identified three factors: test anxiety and two state anxiety factors corresponding to the two occasions of measurement. Additional analyses suggested that occasions of measurement factors were only observed when the occasions differed significantly in A-State intensity level. When the occasions were equated for intensity level, state worry and emotionality factors were also observed. Across all analyses, the optimal solutions were selected on the basis of simple structure, psychological meaningfulness, and invariance across sex. Other solutions were reviewed but were considered less satisfactory in terms of these three criteria. Evidence concerning the discriminant concurrent validity of the TAI worry-emotionality scales as well as the STAI A-State Worry-Emotionality scales was also indicated. (Author/PN)
