Abstract | A survey of attrition in professional special education personnel in Michigan was undertaken through an analysis of computer tape copies of the Michigan Professional Personnel Register and of the Teacher Certification Master File. Among findings was that the number of new positions continued to grow in assignments with mentally impaired, speech disabled, emotionally impaired, visually impaired, hearing impaired, and learning disabled students. Social work, school psychology, consultation for the mentally handicapped, and occupational/physical therapy positions also increased. The annual attrition rate for special education teachers was approximately 11%. Recommendations are made for establishing a common coding system for data files and conducting a statewide study on teacher absence and substitute teacher qualifications. (CL) |
