AbstractVulnerability to crime is examined in this seventh-grade component of a teacher-developed K-eighth grade crime resistance education program. The description of the entire program, which introduces this component, states that major objectives are to promote and maintain positive student attitudes and behavior, assist students in meeting responsibilities, and help students insure their own and other people's safety and welfare. Specific objectives of this component are identified and activities are suggested to reinforce stated objectives. Objectives include defining 'victim' and 'vulnerability,' examining effects of victimization, exploring crime resistance strategies in the community, protecting against consumer dangers, introducing victimless crimes, examining peer pressure, exploring crime-resistance strategies at home, learning babysitting skills, identifying signs of child abuse and neglect, and exploring crime-resistance strategies at school. A wide variety of activities is suggested to work toward these objectives. For example, students are involved in studying cases of innocent victims, analyzing police reports, arranging a schedule of classroom speakers on crime and victimization, making decisions about just restitution to victims of crimes, creating a book on crime, designating selected activities as either vulnerable or safe, role-playing situations in which a student encounters peer pressure to break the law, filling in worksheets on home burglary, and memorizing lists of tips about how to be a good babysitter. For each activity, information is presented on the objectives, materials, and procedures. Worksheets are also provided wherever necessary. The document concludes with a student reading list, a resource directory, and a glossary. (DB)
