Abstract | The spelling program described in this manual was designed with the idea that spelling study initiated in the elementary grades should continue through the middle school years. The manual first describes the program's objectives: to help students learn basic spelling rules, develop an interest in word lore and vocabulary improvement, and develop permanent spelling power. It then gives instructions for the teacher in administering the program. The manual consists of 32 lessons, including word lists, spelling demons, survival words, spelling rules on plurals and suffixes, tricky word pairs, homonyms, and word endings. Included in the manual are seven supplementary lessons on foreign word origins, and a separate section for spelling enrichment with words that are new or less familiar to students than those in the regular lessons.
