AbstractIntended for above average students in grades 4-6, this unit contains student materials and teacher's guide for three sequential lessons on the economic concepts of specialization and division of labor. The units are presented in story form accompanied by cartoon illustrations. In section one students distinguish between goods and services and examine the concept of bartering. Students fill out worksheets on goods and services they used during the week, interview parents and grandparents about their perceptions of luxuries, and make a glossary of relevant terms. Section two examines advertising and the theory of supply and demand. Students fill out charts on sources of advertising, do a class survey of toothpaste brands used, and chart resource needs, probable consumers, and possible jobs created by certain products or services. In section three students analyze the advantages of specialization and identify levels of jobs according to education and training needed. Activities include designing an assembly line. Each section contains a self-check capsule and a pre- and posttest. The teacher's guide lists objectives and materials needed and provides reproducible worksheets and tests with keys. (KC)
