Abstract | Information is given in this booklet on how to implement a language experience approach to reading readiness instruction in the kindergarten based on the experiences of teachers in the Burrillville Reading Observes Necessary Communication Objectives and Skills (BRONCOS) project, a Right to Read program in Burrillville, Rhode Island. An introduction explains the title (one child's story of a nightmare), an overview gives reasons for using the language experience approach based on utilizing the child's oral language as a bridge to reading, a chart lists skills that can be taught in such a program, and step-by-step directions for language experience activities involving a three-day cycle are explained. Instructions are given for making children's individual experience booklets. Stimuli for language experience stories are suggested and several pages of language experience lessons covering several content areas are presented. (MKM) |
