| Abstract | The paralinguistic dimension of telephone counseling in such crisis situations as drug and other personal problems was investigated, based on the importance of paralinguistic cues surrounding the linguistic content of the message for the accurate interpretation of the caller's state of mind. Thirty samples, each a three minute sample of crisis communication, were taken from actual telephone conversations and examined to identify the paralinguistic cues that might allow a crisis center volunteer to determine the level of emotional intensity of the caller. Seven dependent variables were assessed: level of pitch, rate of speaking, articulation errors, editorial errors, filled pauses, within-response pauses, and sobbing. Results indicate that only two significantly positive correlations were observed: the frequency of editorial errors with the use of filled pauses, and the increase in pitch level with sobbing. (DF) |
