AbstractThe purpose of this book is to explain how urban schools can deal productively with problems found embedded in their organizational structure. Written for persons interested in organizational change in schools, the book focuses on the theory of how problem solving in schools does work, how it can work, and how it can be facilitated by change agents from inside or outside the school. Following an overview, chapter 2 discusses the definition of a problem and describes how problems are manifested in schools. Chapter 3 outlines a sequence for solving problems, taking into account the human element. Four meta-skills necessary for effective problem-solving are presented and discussed in detail in chapters 4 and 5. The book concludes with a summary of some of the knowledge and skills necessary if schools are to reach a sustained capacity for solving problems: knowledge of the complexities of humans and their school organizations, and skill in communications, in a systematic procedure for solving problems, in diagnosing organization conditions and processes, in getting information from inside or outside the group, in synergistic group action, and in monitoring the effectiveness of other skills.
