AbstractThis report outlines ways in which health education strategies can be developed within an ambulatory care center and how they can be implemented to optimize their effectiveness and efficiency. Section 1 describes a program planning model for use in the development of health education programs. Sections 2 through 5 trace the consumer through four aspects of an ambulatory care center's program, focusing on the important opportunities for consumer health education. These four sections respectively cover (1) recruitment, (2) utilization, (3) prevention, and (4) adherence to regime. Within each of these sections, the major elements of the problems are analyzed, and suggestions are made concerning program strategies designed to deal with them. Administrative issues inherent in health education programs are presented in the sixth section, followed by a summary (section 7) outlining the basic health education principles applicable to all programs in ambulatory care centers. For those who wish additional information on health education programs in ambulatory care settings, the last section presents an annotated bibliography consisting of seventy-five references. A survey form being used by the American Public Health Association to collect descriptive information on health education elements in health programs is appended. (EM)
