AbstractThe Satellite Technology Demonstration (STD) represented a cooperative and complex effort involving federal, regional, state and local interests and demonstrated the feasibility of media distribution by communication satellite of social services for rural audiences. As part of a comprehensive evaluation plan, the summative data base was augmented with subjective interpretive information derived from three case studies. The case studies conducted as part of the STD data collection activities were expected to produce four major benefits: (1) insights which would help in refining and modifying the data for summative purposes; (2) insights into the sequences of events and motivations occuring at sites; (3) information to amplify and clarify the interpretation of other statistical data received from all sites; and (4) validation of statistical information derived from site visitation serving as a data check for the large quantities of information collected from STD sites. The data collected from the case studies were largely subjective and response to various treatments at the sites varied at both extremes, depending on the methods used and the influence of the local staff. It was concluded that extensive data collection efforts were endured and supported probably because the STD was perceived as having an experimental base. Recommendations for future research was included. (Author/HB)
