Abstract | This report describes an off-campus alternative to traditional summer school sponsored by De Anza College and College of the Redwoods (California). Three twelve-day, concentrated summer programs, called "Action Learning Modules", utilized an interdisciplinary approach. The first module combined oceanography, marine biology, and scuba diving. A second session offered Forest-Ecology, including forestry, ecology, and economics; or Ecology-Science-Theology, including work in astronomy and the philosophy of religion. Choices in a third session included Native American Studies and arts and crafts combined with cultural anthropology; or a Wilderness module, with survival techniques, outdoor recreation and camping, and geology. Both faculty and students rated the modules as academically challenging, very rewarding, and worthy of future continuation. Guidelines are offered for colleges who may wish to develop similar programs. (ER) |
