| Abstract | Data from a longitudinal study of a national sample of boys born in 1946 is used to test Turner's model of "sponsored" social mobility in Britain. Turner suggested that, through selection for one of several forms of secondary education, individuals are sorted into different strata that largely determine their level of attainment in later life. Analysis of the data showed that school selection did have an important effect on later attainment, although the effect became less significant as the subjects grew older. Ability was the second most important determinant of attainment and was the most important factor in secondary school selection. Social background also had a definite effect on school selection. Opportunities for further education after secondary school and the awarding of formal qualifications according to universal standards were seen as factors that tempered the effect of sponsorship in later life.
