| Abstract | Descriptions and appraisals of significant recent trends and developments in the field of information science are presented. The eleven individual chapters deal, respectively, with the following topics: 1) the economics of information, 2) document description and representation, 3) automated language processing, 4) microform technology, 5) library automation, 6) the user interface in interactive systems, 7) selective dissemination of information, 8) primary publications systems and services, 9) information systems applications in education, 10) education for information science, and 11) information and society. Themes stressed which are particularly appropriate in the current period of financial austerity include the maximization of resources through interlibrary operations or networking, cost-effectiveness in library and information services, and the importance of global information systems and services to the world's economy.
