Abstract | A summary of the findings and recommendations of the Citizens' Advisory Committee on Environmental Quality is presented in this report. Specific environmental problems were studied in depth and are reported under the following topics: (1) population and land use; (2) recreation and natural beauty; (3) resource recovery, recycling, and reuse; (4) technology and manpower; and (5) critical issues. Recommendations highlight the need for improvement in land use planning by local and regional bodies, a change in the major thrust of the Federal transportation program from highways to mass transit, a reordering of priorities for Federal Aid to recreation, new approaches to solid waste management, application of cost/benefit analyses to overall and individual environmental programs and projects, and strengthening Federal grant aid for environmental education. Appended material includes a background of the committee together with a description of its activities and publications to date. (BL) |
