Abstract	Communicative competence can be defined as the ability to function in a truly communicative setting, that is, in a dynamic exchange in which linguistic competence must adapt itself to the total informational input, both linguistic and paralinguistic, of one or more interlocutors. The research described in this book focuses on the development of tests of communicative competence suited to the beginning level of a college French program and on the use of tests to measure the effectiveness of early training in communicative skills. The study also explores the potential influence of the instructional setting in shaping attitudes and motives. Details of the experimental instructional program are described along with the educational strategies employed. Test development is also discussed as are test results and the findings and interpretation of the experiment. Implications for the classroom are considered and references are provided. (Author/VM)
