AbstractA study was conducted to determine whether the use of a model enhances the effectiveness of videotape recorded microteaching sessions in changing the behavior of in-service foreign language teachers. The subjects of the experiment were divided into four groups: men teachers of Spanish, women teachers of Spanish, men teachers of French, and women teachers of French. The experimental groups saw a ten-minute videotaped demonstration of a suggested method for teaching vocabulary. The control group did not see the demonstration. Teachers in both groups participated in a videotaped microteaching session. The teachers were subaequently observed to see if they altered their teaching style. It was found that the use of videotape recording with a model is significantly more effective than the use of videotape without a model in producing desired changes in teaching behavior. Some secondary findings concerning the interaction effects between sex and each of the other three factors of age, experience, and academic preparation indicate possible areas for further research.
