AbstractThe French republican system favors equal educational standards throughout the country when teaching geography, under the pretext of equal treatment of all. This renders difficult the task of establishing links between the learning of geography and the local territory, which itself differs from area to another. How could one imagine that children who live, learn and grow in a rural world undergoing profound change could identify with and develop their rapport with the world, when their geographic education does not take into consideration their immediate environment? As part of an applied research at the crossroads of geography and education sciences, a qualitative and comparative approach based method is conducted to analyze graphic productions, verbal and para-verbal exchanges on local surroundings, with three elementary school classes in rural areas. Apart from the "standard practices", the results show paradoxes between geographic realities and children's representations of space.
