(Orig.). During the polar summer of 1987 geoecological investigations were carried out in the area of Ny-Alesund in North-Western Spitsbergen. They were based on an integrative geoecological concept which was developed by Moslmann 1980 and applied in 1984 in Southern Spitsbergen by Leser and Seiler. The investigation of the water and nutrient budget was the main topic, in addition to the geoecological marginal conditions at five sites. Special attention was paid to snow, as snow plays a dominant role in the annual behaviour of high arctic geoecosystems. The main phase of the snow melt is restricted to five to six weeks and is terminated by mid to end of July. Important ecological processes are produced by the melting: it determines the start of lhe frozen ground thawing and therefore the length of the vegetation-cycle. At the same time the melted snow releases nutrient elements from the vegetation and rock surface and transports them. Important changes in concentration are apparent even at a short distance from a snow patch. Particularly noteworthy is the culmination of calcium and magnesium concentration in the first third of August, when both the reduction of the permafrost and the biological activity have reached their maximum. A more detailed consideration of the nutrient concentrations in the snow pack shows a decline compared with the nutrient ooncentrations of the precipitation- and surface snow samples, as the nutrient concentration of a snow pack is changed by its metamorphosis and constant outflow of nutrients.
