Abstract | What is the role of United States universities in preparing graduates for an increasingly interdependent world in which the knowledge of other languages and cultures is once again a critical need? The article reviews the many calls for global understanding and language competence, the barriers to sustained follow-up and action, and the consequences for national security, economic competitiveness, and a globally aware citizenry. It concludes with several recommendations for universities to undertake in partnership with schools, states, business, non-governmental organizations, and the federal government. (Verlag). |
