Although the concept of madness has become obsolete in modern social science and so been reconceptualized in terms of psychiatric illness or psychological disorder, we argue that it should be rethought once again. Drawing an antipsychiatry, anthropology, and critical social theory we argue, accordingly, that madness is best conceived both as communicative resistance to social control and as productive and visionary mentation. |
