(DIPF/Orig.). Nationally and internationally, the historical and contemporary images of boarding schools, their way of life and practices of communication are highly visible. This includes claims about their significance with regard to the ways in which they promote their pupils' happiness and social careers, as places of identity formation, or places of systemically generated abuse. Beyond the media presence, however, a synchronously and diachronically appropriate history of this institution is missing. This article attempts to read the historiography of the boarding school in terms of its genesis and tradition as a material of an overall perspective and to understand this specific educational world as a world of 'Bildung'.
