Abstract	Based on the depiction of concepts of enemies and friends in schoolbooks from the German Democratic Republic in this volume (cf. the article of Eva Matthes, pp. 75-85), this article explores whether schoolbooks for social studies from the Federal Republic of Germany contained such concepts as well. After a definition of the term "concept of the enemy", the development of the school subject "social studies" in the Federal Republic is shortly delined. Subsequently ten schoolbooks (grades 7-9, different types of secondary schools) are examined with regard to concepts of enemies or friends, laying the focus on the depiction of the GDR and of international conflicts. A final conclusion compares the results with those about schoolbooks from the GDR.
