Abstract | This volume deals with basic biological questions for cognitive gerontology: what, precisely, are the changes that the passage of time brings about in the brain and central nervous system and how are these changes related to changes in cognitive competence? Corollary questions are how rapidly changes proceed once they have begun and whether all cognitive abilities change at the same rate or whether some change earlier and faster than others. ... [This text] includes key research on models for ethological and evolutionary ageing. It also takes full account of the body of work on the genetics of animal and human ageing and on genes that directly cause, or that interact with environmental influences to cause, individual differences in the rate of age-related changes.
