Abstract	This contribution aims to explain ways of competence development of professionals by promoting and using experience during their daily working life. "Professional Learning" indicates that the authors focus on subjects, who posses a high degree of professional competence, succeed exceedingly and are called experts. Thus, the authors refer to professionals with a high base level of competence who nevertheless continuously expand their expertise. In their understanding of Professional Learning, they do not focus on competence development processes within formal vocational trainings but rather during their daily working life. An elaborated notion of experience is a crucial determinant of the successful development of professional competence. In the analyses, the authors (1) present a four-component model of professional action competence, (2) explore the role and potential of experience for the development of professional competence, and (3) discuss consequences for the educational design of workplaces in order to foster professional learning and development of action competence at the workplace.
