Was fehlt, sind verlässliche Karriereperspektiven. Einen Ausweg bieten Modelle mit Tenure track, der Option auf eine Dauerstelle. (HoF/Text übernommen). Young German researchers may dream of undertaking independent research for many years before they finally land a professorship, if they iver do. Because the path to such a post is by no means certain, even with an excellent performance redocrd. Reliable career prospects are in short supply. But an answer is provided by those models which include tenure track, with the option of a permanent position. The habilitation was long seen as the only route to a professorship. The German Research Foundation (DFG) initiated a new development in 1999 with its Emmy Noether Programme. This gives early-stage researchers the opportunity to qualify as university teachers without having to produce a habilitation thesis. The DFG programme managed to transport the idea of early independence into the partially ossified structures of German research and academia. But a paradigm shift is slowly emerging. Junior professorhips, introduced in 2002, were conceived as alternatives to ht habilitation. Some 800 junior professorships have meanwhile been established. Yet many young scientists still face the question of "What now?" Univesities and research organisations are trying to encourasge pioneering models. For example, the Volkswagen Foundation's Lichtenberg Professorships have offered tenure track options since 2004. The DFG's Heisenberg Professorhip takes a similar approach. The Donor's Association for Promotion of Sciences and the Humanities in Germany has also recently approved 14 endowed junior professorship with tenure track. (HoF/text adopted). |
