| Abstract | Elbflorenz. So heißt Dresden wegen seiner architektonischen Schönheit, der eindrucksvollen Barockkulisse am Ufer der Elbe. Doch Sachsens Landeshauptstadt gilt heute international auch als Zentrum für Naturwissenschaften und Technik, wo sich Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft erfolgreich vernetzen. Dresden, das im nächsten Jahr sein 800-jähriges Jubiläum feiert, wurde deshalb vom Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft zur "Stadt der Wissenschaft 2006" gekürt. (HoF/Text übernommen). When Dresden's rebuilt Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) was consecrated at the end of October, the whole world looked on the "Florence on the Elbe" as Dresden is known due to its architectural pearls and the impressive baroque setting along the banks of the River Elbe. Besides culture, however, Saxony's state capital also has science and technology of international note to offer today. Dresden's University of Technology, several universities of applied sciences and numerous non-universities of applied sciences and numerous non-university research centres attract investors from industry and small and medium-sized enterprise. The Us electronics corporation AMD has just opened a new chip factory in Dresden. Dresden occupies key future fields with research at the interface between engineering, biology and medicine. One example comes from the field of nanotechnology, where the city on the Elbe is a world leader in nanocoatings. Besides technical institutions, Dresden is also home to colleges of art, music and dance. Dresden celebrates its 800th jubilee next year and has been chosen as the "City of Science 2006" by the Donors Association fot the Promotion of Science and the Humanities in Germany.
