| Abstract | The paper is based upon a study that deals with person perception and linguistic behaviour, focussing on the question how persons are perceived when they perform linguistically according to or deviating from gender roles. Since there are findings about linguistic gender stereotypes in German, the question arises how men and women are perceived when they show gender role congruent or gender role deviant linguistic behaviour. For this reason, findings from social psychology about the influence of gender role congruence or deviance on person perception are applied to linguistic behaviour. The authors' interest is twofold: on the one hand, they want to know to what degree women and men are perceived as feminine or masculine when they behave according to or deviating from the female or male gender roles and on the other hand, they are interested in the evaluation of gender role congruent vs. deviant behaviour i.e. is there a clear preference for congruent behaviour and is deviant behaviour dispreferred?
