Abstract | This training project for learning about research through research brought together representatives from over twenty-five of the ECML [European Centre for Modern Languages] member countries. Its results are contained in a publication and a set of recommandations addressed to policy makers, the overall aim of which is the introduction of cultural mediation into the debate on language didactics. Whereas most innovations in language didactics appear in the form of new teaching tools, the Cultural mediation in language learning and teaching project chose to follow a new path by adopting a "learning by doing" approach to research. It attempted to tackle several challenges: 1. to experience the variety of different teaching cultures of the participants as a source of innovation rather than as an obstacle; 2. to adopt a pluridisciplinary approach by introducing references taken from the social sciences in order to develop reflection on the role of languages in social cohesion; 3. to try and provide answers to a question hitherto rarely raised in the didactics of languages and cultures, namely the place of cultural mediation itself.
