Abstract | This text looks at teachers' awareness of what their students feel about their secondary school studies. Using students' and teachers' statements, four dimensions are examined: how the student relates to his school environment, the academic standards he thinks he has achieved, his personal commitment in schoolwork and his faith in its positive effects. Comparison of students' and teachers' answers shows that teachers largely tend to underestimate students' interest in their schooling and to play down the value that students attach to their schoolwork. Teachers also have a more negative appraisal of students' commitment and sense of responsibility towards studies than that which is apparent in the students' answers. Once we have acknowledged these facts, we may ask ourselves the reasons behind the teachers' perception of students' relationships to their schooling, which does not correspond to what the students themselves say, and we may also reflect on the links that might exist between the teachers' perception and what they expect from their pupils, one knows that these expectations are not unrelated to teaching practices and interaction in class.
