| Abstract | The first part of this paper concerns education, culture and warfare in Europe, whilst the second part is an attempt to engage in a critique of the mode of discourse which is increasingly being adopted in comparative education to discuss such matters. In concentrating on nations and nationalism, one component of European diversity will be analysed. - Issues of nationalism are related, of course, to other forms of xenophobia such as racism, which can themselves also lead to violence and, indeed, to warfare. Furthermore they are elements not entirely unconnected with the curricula of schools and universities in Europe. This paper, then, is but one slice of a complete analysis which would attempt to describe all manifestations of curricular xenophobia and relate them to violence and warfare within Europe and beyond.
