Abstract | [The essay] examines seven models of separation and integration in the schools of selected nations in Europe: Belgium, Wales, Germany, France, and England. There is no attempt to examine every program of every non-mainstream group in these locales. The focus is on a spectrum: at one end, the separatism of indigenous groups in Belgium and Wales, in the center, the segmented pluralism of "others" in Germany and the multicultural pluralism of pilot projects funded by supranational agencies; at the other end, the ambiguous assimilationism of a national curricula in France and in England.
