Abstract	The contributions of this volume "try to explain the reasons for the ' poor fit' between poor, immigrant, linguistically different, and racial minority students" and agree that these students "can be affected by the school's institutional policies - but how these policies should be changed to ensure this success is not so clear.... Recognizing the importance of communities and families in a child's education, the editors have included chapters dealing with ways in which the efforts of communities and families to influence the education of children can be enhanced." Examples of strategies for educating the above mentioned students from "nontraditional background" are described: preschool education, the federal compensatory education programs, preparation for work of pupils who go on work after high school completion, curriculum controversies in multicultural education, minority schools.
