Abstract	This contribution describes specific differences in family structure and family life between the former GDR and FRG. Current changes due to the unification process are outlined to illustrate the role of families in linking the sociopolitical and economic changes to adolescent development. The author begins with pointing out differences in family life and parent-child relations between the former GDR and FRG. She then turns to losses and gains following the unification, particularly changes in the economic situation of children and families, and processes of social differentiation that are likely to leave the East German population in an unfavorable "newcomer" position. Finally she describes adolescents' future expectations and related changes in life- outlook in the East, closing with recommendations for future research. (DIPF/orig./Kr.).
