AbstractThe presentation highlighted four areas in which Northern Ireland has developed some experience and materials; guidance for teachers on developing the European Dimension, contained in the book entitled "Thinking European"; one school's approach to the European dimension; its European Studies project; and the "Euroquest" "Play Europe" game. In doing so it assumed that teacher recognition of the importance of the European dimension in education is vital if pupils are to be provided with the opportunities necessary to prepare them to meet the challenges of the future in Europe. Young people need to know about and understand the significance of European institutions such als the Council of Europe and the European Community. They need to be aware of the integration process of which they are a part and be prepared to take advantage of the opportunities available through travel, exchange programmes, and training and employment. They also need to learn about the vast cultural heritage of nations within Europe and be able to set European affairs and European responsibilities in an appropriate global context. Controversial issues, such as the break-up of former European states, conflict between ethnic groups and refugee problems within Europe, need to be set alongside the benefits of integration.
