Abstract	This article is published in the context of the attempt to present the ' institutional response' by universities to the evaluation efforts and the pressure put on them by governments and society at large. It is based on the results of a comparative, empirical research project, EVALUE, which tried to elucidate how European universities 'live and implement' evaluation in its different dimensions. The author of this article shows that there is growing interest amongst universities in their functioning and an increase in the number of evaluations of the organisation, i.e. their academic structures (teaching and research), support services ( libraries, computer services, etc.) and administrative services. But curiously, greater university autonomy seems to go hand in hand with a greater number of evaluations launched by external evaluation bodies. (DIPF/orig.)
