Abstract | Dennis Brutus is one of South Africa's foremost modern poets writing in English. The essay sheds some light on the peculiar literary strategies he employs in order to come to grips with the aftermaths of the 1960s and the bitter harvest of Verwoerdian apartheid. The basic premise here is that every literary text can be placed within a larger cultural context and that it is generated in response to a problematic situation within this context with the aim to inspire a more direct course of action. Bearing this in mind, the case of Dennis Brutus can help to elucidate the literary struggle of many liberal-oriented coloured and black South African poets in the two decades following the 1948 elections.
