Abstract | A specific element of intercultural youth exchange programs that has not been subjected to extensive empirical research is the outcomes that adolescents experience when they participate in long-term sojourns to alien cultural environments. The purpose of this article is to investigate the dynamics of the intercultural adjustment process among adolescents. Specifically, I will examine the socio- psychological outcomes associated with the sojourn. ... For example, do adolescent sojourners become more international in their outlook as a result of an intercultural experience? Do adolescent sojourners who participate in exchanges develop more sensibility toward people of other cultures? What type of adjustment do adolescent sojourners experience upon returning to their native cultures? What do they see as the benefits of an intercultural experience? To answer these questions, I will present data from an ethnographic study of the cognitve, behavioral, and affective dimensions of the intercultural adjustment proscess as experienced by a sample of 28 Thai adolescent exchange students who participated in a one-year host familiy exchange to the United States.
