Abstract | The number of higher education students in Spain has increased sixfold in the last 30 years. From 1986 to 1995, the number of students enrolled in universities rose from 900,000 to one-and-a-half million. Obviously, this rapid growth has greatly influenced the structure and resources of the system, the attitudes of students, teachers and society towards higher education and the status of graduates in the labour market. This article is divided into five parts. The first describes the Spanish educational system. The second highlights the growth in demand for higher education in the last decade. The third analyses the policies implemented to meet the demand. The fourth discusses the socioeconomic factors that explain the demand for higher education and the fifth analyses some of the consequences of the change in the structure of higher education, such as the socio-economic background of university students and the status of graduates in the labour market.
