Abstract | The Institute of Research on the Economics of Education (IREDU) was established in 1971, with Professor Jean Claude Eicher as its head. IREDU was the outcome of a CNRS initiative which aimed to develop a research centre in the economics of education, a field which had been developing in Anglo-Saxon countries since around 1960. Nowadays IREDU is a research team, acting both for CNRS and the Université de Bourgogne. Its funding comes mainly from these two institutions but also from the Burgundy region administration, French national agencies and European and international organisations. 30 staff are employed, excluding associate members and students enrolled in the doctoral program.
