Abstract | In this chapter, we review the development of curriculum changes in the Slovak school system from 1989 to the present. Firstly, in Section 5.0, we summarize the situation before the Velvet Revolution (1989), and then we introduce curriculum changes in the context of the transforming school system in the four phases that are typical for so called post-Communist countries (Birzea, 1996): deconstruction (1989-1992), partial stabilization (1992-2001), systemreconstruction (2001-2008) and phase of implementation, correction and relative stabilisation (2008+). Finally we outline the challenges and prospects for further school and curricular reform in Slovakia. |
