Abstract | This empirical study examines orientations toward political behaviors in adolescence and young adulthood. Firstly, variables are identified which predict changes in young people's orientations toward political behaviors based on theoretical foundation. To do this, the developmental trajectories of adolescents' willingness to participate in politics and attitudes toward political engagement between the grades seven and eleven were examined while accounting for the effects of school track and gender. While no differences were found from gender variation, the findings revealed distinct developmental trajectories depending on the attended school track. That means, increasing developmental trajectories were shown for students from the college-bound school track, whereas lower track students showed no average changes in their willingness to participate in politics and even decreasingly positive attitudes toward political engagement. The analysis gives support to the Theory of Planned Behavior to provide a valid framework helping to predict young people's intentions and actual involvement in political activities. (ICF). |
