Abstract | Currently, the state youth policy is aimed at establishing a stable, conscious and positive attitude of the younger generation to healthy lifestyle, which is one of the main directions of modern education of children and youth. The present article presents the results of the study of the motivation for sports activity among pupils of special (remedial) schools. Formation of the need for self-guided physical training and understanding of the value of healthy lifestyle among children with health impairments is necessary for their future successful socialization and self-fulfillment in the society. The leading sports training motives of children with health impairments were determined using A.N. Nikolaev's technique. The technique implied estimating 20 situations, which reflect the main 6 groups of sports training motives: motives aimed at process, result, self-cultivation, duties, material rewards and communication. Subject to study were pupils (n = 118) of special (remedial) schools (I-II, IV, VI, VIII type) and secondary pupils (n = 44) of the Ivanovo region of 11-13 years of age who trained in sports clubs. The study revealed the most and the least important sports training motives of pupils of special (remedial) schools, attending sports clubs, and secondary school children who did not have any health issues. The most important motives for all pupils were the ones are aimed at the sports training process itself and self-improvement. Material reward and duties were referred to the category of the least important motives for pupils. Analysis of the sports training motivation of pupils of special (remedial) schools can be used as a way of formation of motivation at early stages of sports training, identify methods for correcting the motor function of this category of children and adjusting them to the sports activities.
