Abstract	In Germany, there are still prejudices against working mothers, especially concerning detrimental effects on their children's scholastic achievement. In studies with more than one thousand families of secondary school pupils in eight West German cities, three major findings resulted: 1) More than fathers' education and profession, mothers' professional status based on further education showed to be important for the fact whether their child attended a special class for gifted children rather than a regular class. 2) The older pupils became, the more relevant was their mothers' professional status for attaining good grades. 3) The goals of working mothers differed from those of not employed mothers with respect to achievement motivation and the importance they attributed to taking responsibility and working in a team. They engaged in more educational activities outside work. There was no difference in life satisfaction in families with working or not working mothers. The findings stress a strong positive impact of professionally working mothers on the scholastic achievement of their children. (DIPF/Orig.).
